Lesvos is the third largest Greek island in the Aegean, and is also known as 'Angel Island' because of its wonderful monasteries and chapels dedicated to the Angelic realms.
Remaining unspoilt and mostly untouched by tourism, you will find yourself stepping back in time if you choose to explore many of the villages nestling in the hills and by the sea throughout the island. The local people are very friendly and you may easily find yourself invited to sit and drink coffee, or be tempted to sample the local ouzo- a strong tasting drink which is usually drunk with water and can be accompanied by a ‘meze’ of tasteful delights including the local feta cheese.
The climate is as warm as the people, with many hours of sunshine throughout the year, even the winters often remain bright with blue skies, to tempt those seeking peace in a world away from the stresses of life.
The beaches on the island vary from sand or small stones to those in the south of the island which have been known to be scattered with semi-precious stones. The beaches of Anaxos, Petra, Eftalou, Eressos and Vatera are the largest on the island. From the stony beach of Eftalou with its beautifully wild and natural backdrop, you can quite clearly see the coast of Turkey with little villages tucked into the hillside. Overall, the sea is clear and there are many beaches with shallow waters for those with children in mind.
There are some beautiful walks in spring taking you up into the fragrant hillsides where you can ramble amongst the many wildflowers and herbs. For bird watchers, Lesvos is THE place to be in spring when the Island is full of many species of migratory birds. Remember to bring a sensible pair of shoes with you if you want to go rambling though, and a hat is particularly useful, especially for children.
Many natural hot springs can be found on the island and during your stay you may want to visit those in Eftalou, which are situated in a little building on the beach, where dips into the springs can be alternated with short swims in the sea to enhance wellbeing. Further afield are the wonderful springs of Therma in the bay of Gera. These were the favourite place for the preparation of brides- to- be and have two fountains pouring mineral waters straight from the heart of the mountains into the generously sized pools of which there are two; strictly one for men and one for women. The temperature of the waters here is milder than all the other springs on the island and children are welcome. You can find further details on hot springs at hydrotherapy.com - this site gives you an insight on the healing properties of the thermal waters.
The vast difference in natural environments from east to west signifies volcanic activity many moons ago, which has created a unique petrified forest, known to be the only one of its kind other than that in Arizona USA. Huge areas of dry and arid mountains are a reminder of the strength of Mother Nature and combined with the oasis of life in and around little villages leading to Eresos, (famed for the poet Sappho), makes Lesvos yet again unique in many ways. The east is lush with olive trees, pine forests, and oak trees amongst others with a rich abundance of flora and fauna.
The interesting salt flats of Kalloni are a favourite place for flamingos as well as many other winged species including some extremely rare birds such as the Black Stork, and the Middle Spotted Woodpecker. We are also blessed to have Mediterranean Monk Seals and of course the scene would not be complete without dolphins!
During the year there are various celebrations with festivals taking place on the island, which you will be notified of during your stay for those who wish to participate. Why not join the locals and make the long pilgrimages to many famous monasteries situated all over the island.
I must mention the monastery on the outskirts of a village called Mantamados, which houses the icon of ‘Taxiarchis’ (Archangel Micheal, head of the Archangels). Many islanders claim to have had personal experiences of miracles being granted for them here. In fact inside the beautiful church are housed three cabinets full of jewellery which is given by those to whom St. Michael grants miracles as an offering of thanks.
Lesvos has plenty of beautiful churches and so much to offer in all ways to those seeking inspiration and enlightenment in many various forms.
The village of Molyvos, where you will be staying, is well worth a visit and is home to many artists, poets and romantics and is one of the most beautiful villages on the island.
Here you’ll find a mediaeval castle, bustling harbour and lots of history in the many cobbled streets with quaint little shops and houses. The castle is lit up at dusk and is a magnificent sight as you round the mountains from Petra. Like a fairy tale castle suspended in the air, illuminated by an orange glow, this like most of Lesvos, is most definitely the place where dreams come true…
